Frequently Asked Questions atHARRISHART

Q: What is Epsom salts and how do they work?

Here is the science bit – hopefully made simple

A: Epsom salts are magnesium sulphate. Salts are just molecules that form because the parts have opposite electrical charges that bind together. Magnesium has a positive charge. Sulphate has a negative charge and performs all sorts of unique biological functions.

These two elements separate in liquid. The magnesium and sulphate in the salts are absorbed into the body through the skin.

Any Epsom salts left on the skin may continue to be absorbed as long as it is still on the skin, offering continuous ‘timed-released' input into the bloodstream – like medications given through skin patches as Sulphate is believed to circulate in the body up to eight hours.

Our ‘modern' processed diets are deficient in magnesium, which Epsom salts provides in a highly absorbable form.
